Although the first temptation in Paradise corrupted man by severing the bond between him and God, it is, as the Church Fathers write, the only way by which man could move from the state of innocence and ignorance to knowledge and became righteous through the free choice of truth and good and the rejection of evil. On one side of the pendant are the seven virtues and on the other side there are seven deadly sins, our constant companions, which can ultimately swallow us up like a whirlpool.
